Second book in the series....second favorite.

The Diamonds series by Shana Galen is a fun one. Don't get me wrong, I love EVERYTHING she writes, but this premise is a good one. The characters are different, the heroes are tortured. There's angst, there's romance, there's HEA. The first book in the series was a true gem...This one was good but not quite to the same level.

In a nutshell - The Diamonds are three courtesans who have been given special monikers by the Prince, giving them well-deserved notoriety in society. Interestingly, none of the gals are true courtesans (though they have their own reasons for acting as such). Our Heroine is Fallon, the most secretive of the group. Our Hero is an ex-spy and third son.

You can see how the story goes...Courtesan doesn't think she's good enough for the Hero...Hero is angsty because of the strained relationship with his father...It makes for good stuff though some of it falls flat. The love story is rushed. The action is ok but not as good as the last book. Overall, I got through it, but....didn't feel like I fell in love with the characters like I have with other Galen books.

If You Give a Rake a Ruby Jewels of the Ton Shana Galen 0760789237683 Books Reviews

This is the second in the Jewels of the Ton trilogy and features Fallon, the Marchioness of Mystery and Warrick Fitzhugh. Warrick is a spy who has been marked for death by an unknown traitor and he enlists Fallon’s help in trying to find and defeat the assassin sent for him, stop them from killing any more of his fellow spies, and ultimately find the traitor responsible as well. At first he just plans on using Fallon, but the more he gets to know her, the more he admires her spirit and courage, as well as not being able to keep his hands off of her. Fallon’s background is best kept secret and she now portrays herself as a courtesan, so she doesn’t feel that she deserves a man like Warrick and is determined not to fall in love. It was delightful to see these characters with troubled pasts and lots of secrets find each other and work through all of the obstacles, not only from outside sources, but also from their inner demons, to find the happiness they deserve. I enjoyed the scenes where Lily, the Countess of Charm appeared and the intriguing hints as to her secrets that will be revealed in the final book in the series. I can’t wait to find out what happens next in Sapphire’s are an Earl’s Best Friend.
If You Give a Rake a Ruby is the second book in Shana Galen's Jewels of the Ton series. And just like the first book is an excellent read. Fallon, the Marchioness of Mystery has secrets, secrets that Warrick Fitzhugh wants to use to find the person responsible for the threat on his life & many others. However, as many attempts are made on their lives Warrick comes to realize that Fallon's secrets contribute to her strength & will to survive. Traits he comes to love. Fallon realizes that Warrick is not like the other gentlemen of the ton...only wanting her for her body. She realizes the huge difference in their stations (& not just that she's a famed courtesan) & is determined to not fall in love. Can Warrick convince her that she is worth more than she thinks & accept that he loves her?

A sign of a good writer is one who can draw you into the story. Shana Galen is just that. By the end of If You Give a Rake a Ruby I am soooo ready to read Sapphires are an Earl's Best Friend!
“If You Give a Rake a Ruby” is the second book of a 3-books series (Jewels of the Ton), which should be read in order. Each is its own book, but without the previous book, you may be a bit confused.

This book had great parts and parts I would like to fix.

I liked the steady easy flow to the story, the writing, and the idea of the theme for tying the three ladies together. I also liked how Fallon was a strong character able to physically (for the most part) take care of threats against her (I liked that she didn’t go cry in a corner), and Warrick having wartime flashbacks (touches of it without drowning us in it).

The scene in the beginning where she beats a gentleman for trying to attack her sets the tone for the character strong and resourceful. In the area of historical romances, you don’t often see a female character winning in a physical fight. Therefore, this was a nice change of pace. On the other hand, there were times that Warrick should have stepped in sooner to help instead of standing there watching.

Liked how a wartime flashback at ball was used as a vehicle for parental approval, but this angle should have been worked into the story more. This was too sudden, the parents' change of attitude jarring. Felt like the author got stuck and made leaps with the parents without building to the conclusion of that topic (acceptance of disowned son / marriage approval).

What I didn’t care for were questions left un-answered. For instance, the way Fallon came under the care of Lord and Lady Sinclair felt as if it was tossed in at the last minute in order to get her into their home and be part of “The Three Diamonds”. It was a weak entry line into their home.

There’s no explanation as to why Warrick believes Fallon is a co-conspirator or actual killer because there’s no solid reason or evidence given – total jump in logic. As far as Warrick is concerned, no one else is a contender for being the killer in the beginning. Sorry, being quiet about your past doesn’t make you a spy or a killer, but Warrick didn’t get that memo and jumps to conclusions.

Another part that left me dissatisfied was how we discovered the owner of the three rubies, who happens to be the killer. Here Warrick is running all over, putting both himself and Fallon in danger, to find the identity of the person who’s trying to kill him. Then Lady Sinclair conveniently gives Warrick the enemy’s name as if talking about the weather in the last pages of the book. Granted, Lady Sinclair didn't know that was the killer's name, but it was too simple, too easy for Warrick at the end. It was like getting cold water dumped on you – wasn’t fun.

There were other areas needing some work in explanation or transition, but didn’t distract much from the story which was an easy enjoyable read.
