This book is one of my absolute favorite children's books! When I was little I used to check it out from the library all the time and I was so excited to get a copy for my daughter so she can enjoy it for years to come as well. I even bought a copy for my niece for Christmas. As for the handful of people that left negative reviews that said the book involved 'trickery and deceit'... those people need to LIGHTEN UP! It is simply a children's book about a mouse, strawberry and an offsite bear. And the illustrations are gorgeous! I even used some of the pages as artwork in my daughters nursery. If you like this book then check out the Christmas version too... it is called "Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear".Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear (Child's Play Library)

Who can predict what toddlers will like? My 2.5 yr old son loves this book and it's one of the few that he says, "Read again!" after we get to the end of it. It's not annoying for me to read either so I don't mind. )
It was an amazing day when our son, who'd enjoyed the breathless suspense of this wonderful book since before he could talk, figured out that the whole thing was a trick -- he was DELIGHTED with this discovery, thought it was hilarious, and chuckled his little noggin off, to our glee. Yes, of course, this could be a book about sharing that didn't involve a faceless narrator and a notably absent "villain" in the big hungry bear, but geez, aren't there a jillion boring lame books about sharing, not to mention tv shows and sanctimonious teachers, babysitters, and in-laws? What's fun about this story is the layers of its unfolding drama, and the eventual realization your little one will have that we never see the bear in question, so, ... Anyway, we love this book, and can't recommend it highly enough. It's in the pantheon of all-stars in our library, along with All the World,The Snowy Day 50th Anniversary Edition,Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books), and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes.
I bought this book in hardback 30 years ago for my own sons, and in the course of raising a family, wore it out and replaced it at least once. I love that it is now available as a board book, and I buy it for all the new babies in our family. Everyone says that the kids love it, just like mine did. It is a great book for reading out loud, can't recommend it enough.
My 2 year old loves this book. Strawberries are her favorite fruit, so of course we have to munch on a few when we read this book. Pictures are large and perfect for this age. As a former children's librarian, I can say this is a winner and a definite children's classic.
My children loved this book years ago. I bought this one for a baby shower. Unfortunately, this published version is not the same quality as the one I bought from Discovery Toys years ago. It is small and a carboard type book. The colors are muted and not vibrant. I still haven't given it away as it just isn't special enough for a present.
For pre-readers to beginning readers, the picture is what tells the story. This book invites you to pore over each page, the art work is captivating, and the text is lyrical., rhythmic enough to facilitate memorization, beautiful enough to make this a favorite read aloud for parents and for children.
As an educator, mother of 4 (now grown) children and an avid reader, this book still delights.
We would gladly have granted a five star review for this book but for the fact that the more recent board book edition we received was disappointingly dull colored. The original hardcover copy that we borrowed from the library was beautiful and the kids and I could totally sympathize with the little mouse for wanting to eat that red ripe strawberry. It looked delicious. Same clever story in our board copy but if I were the mouse here I would just let the old bear have that lack-luster piece of fruit. If, however, you are thinking about purchasing a paper copy of this book then go for it.
Very disappointed. I had this book as a child and remember the pictures being so bold and vibrant like the book advertised but it isn’t at all. Someone had mentioned this in an earlier comment and suggested getting the soft cover as it was only the board book that had lost the bright colors, no, apparently they’re all dull now.
