I found this story very imaginative and fun. The main character is a shifter. He finds out in the first couple of pages that he is from another planet and must return home after all these years. When he is presented to the King he is informed that the pirates are taking over and making areas of the world that are becoming like erased and no contact can be made with the people that live there and they have to be stopped before the blackness takes over the whole planet.
As a shifter he has the ability to change forms into pretty much anything that he is thinking about and has to undergo training to stabilize his thinking and maintain his magical powers. He is told that his parents are still alive and his shifter powers are possibly the most powerful that anybody has ever seen. He just maybe the key to saving the planet and finding his parents.
There was a lot of descriptions and world-building so even middle grade readers will need to have a good attention span as there is not a lot of action in the book, but mostly imagery, magic and has a good theme to the ending that is thought provoking and good a discussion topic.

Review
I received this book in return for a honest review from the author. The story is about Lewis a twelve year old boy who up until his twelfth birthday thought he was different. His thoughts are confirmed when he wakes up in bed with the body of a bug, which he passes off as a dream. However seconds later while brushing his teeth he turns into a raptor with razor sharp teeth, realizing he's not just a normal boy he instantly wonders if he's a mutant.

After school Lewis comes home to find his house has burned down, and his father has passed away. He doesn't have time to decide what to do, he's attacked by a drake a wolf man who was sent to capture him, and saved by Master Long who takes him to Xor. Once in Xor Lewis meets the king who tells him that the world of Xor is in trouble unless they can stop the Realm Pirates from covering the planet in darkness.

Lewis embarks on a quest to save Xor, with his new friends Master Long, Grand Magician K'Bol's, Professor Nand and Five. The group sets out stop the Realm Pirates before they can rule all of Xor in darkness. The group decides that finding Dalith the Beneficent the most powerful sorceress will know how to help Lewis save Xor. On the way to finding the elusive Dalith, they encounter many beings along the way, saving people from a monster who feeds on free will and Building a lake in a underground cave just to name a few.

This book has instantly draws you in within the first few pages, you want to know more about who Lewis really is and what he can do. The characters are well written, you instantly fall in love with them and rooting for Lewis to fight the darkness. I like that he's not alone, even though his parents are gone and his biological parents have been kidnapped by the Realm Pirates he still keeps his cool and works hard to do whatever it takes. The book is a non-stop adventure, I had a hard time putting it down I wanted to know what would be next. I found the whole concept unique and refreshing.

This was a cute book. The story had a very fairy tale feeling to it.

Guys with rabbit ears, magical socks, magicians, genetically altered wolf men - what's not to love? Those weren't the reasons behind my rating, though. (Well...maybe the rabbit man factored in *just* a little.)

What I liked best about this book was its tone, and message. A lot of books aimed at younger boys tend to try to use anger as a connecting point - the main character is mad at how things have turned out, and has to learn to control his anger throughout the book. Or they'll focus on how awkward and pimply the boys feel. This book tried a different approach - connecting through sadness.

The main character suffers through all sorts of terrible things that happen to him. It becomes an internal struggle between Lewis and his personal demons, so to say. And the moral of the story isn't that if you hit something enough, you'll win. There is no fight at the end. Lewis saves the day because he finds a way to not necessarily overcome sadness, but by remembering that for every sad memory he has, there are even more happy ones.

It was just a wonderful message, and it was worked into the story very nicely.

I liked the half magic, half science fiction approach the book takes. The imagery is vivid, and interesting.

I had so much fun reading this book. Lewis Nash is one of the greatest characters I've ever encountered in literature. I can't wait for the sequel!
I enjoyed reading this book. It is very creative. What a great concept. Wouldn't it be wonderful to shape shift. Not only yourself but even create things all the while having a great adventure.
